Communication & Design

Dear industrial designers, graphic designers, web designers, copywriters, project managers, photographers, product designers, SEO experts and packaging designers, many of your colleagues are already working for companies in Berlin and Brandenburg or for agencies there that specialize in communications, public relations, digital and social media.

The capital region is home to numerous agencies with a range of specializations. These include kakoii, Heimat Berlin, the Salz Advertising Agency, denkwerk, Moccu and KROSS Advertising as well as the many companies, both large and small, that have their own communication and design departments, such as Wall, SECURITAS, Gewobag, randstad and the Berliner Volksbank. So you have a choice of either working for a company, for instance as a product designer in a development team together with product developers and engineers, or as a PR manager, or, more traditionally, at an agency or publishing company as a graphic designer, copywriter, concept developer or account manager.

You'll also find jobs in the political arena as well as at foundations and associations. Most of Germany's political parties are headquartered in Berlin and almost every party has a foundation of its own – for example, the CDU's Konrad Adenauer Foundation or the Linke's Rosa Luxembourg Foundation. In addition, product designers are always needed in technical production, for example in engineering and designing components and subassemblies at Siemens or Bombardier. Or in the pharmaceutical and medical technology industry – where you’ll find, among other things, jobs in the communications and marketing departments at Bayer HealthCare or with orthopedics giant Otto Bock. The choices are practically endless.

Salaries are, as always, based on experience and the current pay rates in effect at the respective companies. At agencies, for instance, average earnings per year are 30,000 euros gross. Berlin also has a great many freelancers working in the communication & design sector. As a freelancer, you can expect to earn a daily fee starting at around 250 euros. But you'll have to bear the costs of health insurance and taxes yourself. Your exact rate of pay will depend on your negotiating skills. So get started on your job search now! It'll pay off in the end.
