Education & Social Sectors

Dear educators, social workers, teachers, caregivers, social education workers, aid workers, social scientists, psychologists, mediators, remedial therapists, social workers, and youth educators, with 3.5 million inhabitants, Berlin has a great social need and a high demand as well as a huge variety of private and public facilities and services in the education and social sectors.

When we talk about the education and social sectors, we mean, for example, child and youth welfare; continued and further education; projects with senior citizens; self-help promotion and support; services for the disabled; social management; as well as the Federal Volunteers Service (Bundesfreiwilligendienst) and research. In addition to the Berlin and Brandenburg kindergartens, youth facilities, institutes of education, and community centers, potential employers in the sector also include contact and outreach centers, community colleges, language schools, youth clubs, charity groups, addiction counseling centers, children’s homes, the Regional Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo), and the Regional Office for People with Disabilities (Landesamt für Menschen mit Behinderung). Groups such as the Workers’ Welfare Association (AWO) or small associations such as the Berlin Institute for Early Childhood Education and Family-Oriented Childcare (Bik e.V.) are always on the look out for educators and teachers.

Research is carried out, for example, in the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), the Berlin Institute for Social Research (BIS), or in the ISG Institute for Social Research. Focal points for research at the WZB are, for instance, “education, work, life chances”, “market and decision”, “society and economic dynamics”, and “migration and diversity.”

Salary will always depend on professional experience and the company in question. On average, a social worker earns annually between 25,000 and 35,000 euros before tax, an educator between 22,000 and 30,000 euros annually, and psychologists between 31,500 and 45,000 euros per year. Salaries are often bound by collective agreements and depend on your position in the job. In general, one can say that salary increases with experience. Start your job search now!
