Finance, Law & Insurance

Calling all financial advisors, investment professionals, bankers, corporate lawyers, paralegals, lawyers in training and insurance salesmen. Berlin, with its 3.5 million residents, is a hub of finance, law and insurance.

17 banks have their headquarters in the capital, including the Berliner Volksbank, Berliner Sparkasse, Sparda-Bank Berlin and Noris Bank – businesses you can include in your job hunt. There are also several branch offices of larger banks, such as Deutsche Bank or Commerzbank, along with 5 representations for foreign banks. The Mitte district, the former banking center, is the financial heart of Berlin. But Mitte is also home to most institutions of government. And because Mitte serves as the seat of government, many professional banking associations, such as the Federal Association of German Banks, German Savings Bank Association and the Association of German Public Sector Banks, are also based in Berlin – and therefore may also be potential employers. Currently, more than 6,000 of your colleagues are working at the Landesbank Berlin, over 4,000 are employed at branches of Deutsche Bank in Berlin and more than 2,000 at the Berlin branches of Commerzbank.

Around 14,000 lawyers are currently working in the capital city. Owing to its large population and the demand that it generates, the area has many large and small law firms where you can find work. Legal professionals are always in demand wherever legal expertise is needed. So your potential employers also include the Berlin city administration (particularly the judicial agencies) as well as both large and medium-sized businesses – where you may be able to find a job, for example, as legal counsel. The high concentration of companies in Berlin also provides excellent opportunities for business and management consultants as well.

Berlin is the fifth largest insurance hub in Germany. In all, 24 insurance companies are headquartered here, including IDEAL insurance, Signal Iduna Pensionskasse, Feuersozietät Berlin Brandenburg and Gothaer Finanzholding. The offices of major insurance companies as well as the many small Berlin-based independent expert agencies are likewise prospective employers.

Salaries are based, as always, on experience and current pay rates at the respective companies. Paralegals earn 25,000 euros and up annually before taxes, an insurance salesperson brings home 30,000–40,000 euros a year and bank employees earn between 27,000 and 42,000 euros per year. So get started on your job search now! It'll pay off in the end.
