Skilled Crafts & Trades

Calling all bricklayers, house painters, beauticians, hairdressers, construction workers, auto mechanics, plumbers, tailors, tilers, rope makers, shoe repairers, plasterers, scaffold erectors and other craftsmen and craftswomen, around 185,000 of your colleagues are already working at one of the over 30,000 skilled trade enterprises in Berlin.

By skilled trades, we mean the construction trades (residential and commercial construction, civil engineering, road construction) and traditional trades, such as instrument makers, chassis and vehicle assemblers or engravers along with professional trades such as plumbers, mechanics or tailors – in short, professional trades from A for appliance manufacturers to Z for zookeepers. With a population of 3.72 million and a large corporate density, Berlin has a high demand for professional trade services. Consequently, there are many shops specializing in skilled trades where you can go looking for a job – mainly small and medium-sized businesses and workshops such as jewelry studios, shoemaker shops, garages, beauty salons and tailor shops.

There is increasing demand among capital city residents for handmade products and professional services – companies such as Kaiser honey, Christian Künder bookbinders, the Amann men's tailor shop, abitare carpentry, Bandow goldsmiths or the vanilla & marille ice cream makers are just a few examples of successful businesses whose services the citizens of Berlin have come to appreciate. Jobs in the professional trades are always in demand in any major metropolitan center.

Salaries are based, as always, on experience and current pay rates at the respective companies. A bricklayer, for example, earns on average around 30,000 euros per year before taxes, a house painter between 20,000 and 30,000 euros, and a plant mechanic or heating systems installer between 25,000 and 50,000 euros annually. In general, you can expect to earn a bit more at a well-established company than at a company that's still relatively new on the scene. So get started on your job search now! It'll pay off in the end.
